Welcome to another episode of Culture Add! On this episode Moe speaks to Alex Doris, the Senior Manager of Digital and Design at Goodlife Fitness. With over 1 500 000 members internationally, Goodlife is continuing to expand their global employee network.

Alex’s Journey To Goodlife

Alex started his career journey in sales and marketing at small e-commerce companies, but transitioned to more management based roles, specifically product management. This gave him the opportunity to explore a more strategic and supportive role where Alex found his passion of helping to impact people’s businesses and livelihoods.

This led Alex to Goodlife: where “brand side” marketing, and leadership are core areas of his focus.

Curious About the Interview Process?

Goodlife goes through the standard resume screening, behavioural interview, and screen call process but what’s extremely unique about Goodlife is their “take-home assignments” that candidates must complete.

Typically, these assignments provide a basic outline to a problem that Goodlife faces, and candidates must clearly articulate a solution. Of course, these assignments vary based on the seniority of the role being hired, but here are a few criteria that Alex highlights:

  1. Try to clearly articulate your thoughts and offer justifications for your assumptions
  2. For Junior Roles: Goodlife isn’t looking for the right answer, just your approach to tackling a problem with limited information.
  3. For Senior Roles: clarity, communication, and providing a correct answer are imperative.

Following up with the assignment process, candidates must present their solution to a panel of 3 members, so good presentation and communication skills are important!

Soft Skills at Goodlife:

Alex truly values communication; how you portray yourself and present your ideas is extremely important. Goodlife values a balance of hard technical skills as well as your ability to sell an idea.

“There’s more to being part of a process than execution.”

The Future at Goodlife:

The future of Goodlife is: digital.

What is a digital fitness experience like? Goodlife is going to be focusing on creating tools to help members better track their progress and fitness goals. These tools range from connecting workout programs to offering FitBit levels of health tracking to augment the user experience from anywhere.

Would You be A Good Fit?

Alex prioritizes strategists, designers, and researchers on his team who are curious individuals that truly appreciate fitness. A candidates really needs to understand the user experience on a personal level to solve key problems during the transition from gym workouts to at-home fitness programs and progress tracking.

The Culture at Goodlife:

Goodlife has a range of core values of trust, care, compassion, integrity, passion, personal fit, happiness, and collaboration. But what Alex has really noticed are that:

“Everyone cares, caring and compassion and collaboration are the three seeds I’ve really noticed”

From entry-level employees to senior executives, everyone at Goodlife is truly supportive to help every person succeed.
